Your Voice, Your Vote: How Democracy Works

Imagine your class needs to choose one film for a school trip. One option: your teacher picks alone and nobody else gets a say. Another option: everyone votes and the most popular choice wins. Which feels fairer — and why? Most people instinctively prefer the second option. That instinct is at the heart of democracy. Today you will explore where that idea came from, how it works in the real world, and what it asks of you as a citizen.

The word democracy comes from two ancient Greek words: demos, meaning 'the people', and kratos, meaning 'power' or 'rule'. Put them together and democracy means rule by the people. In a democracy, the people who live in a country — its citizens — have the power to shape the decisions that affect their lives. They do this directly or through representatives they choose by voting in elections. A representative is someone elected to speak and make decisions on behalf of a group of people. There are two main forms of democracy. In a direct democracy, citizens vote on every issue themselves. In a representative democracy — the most common form today — citizens elect representatives, such as members of parliament or congress, to make decisions for them. Most countries use representative democracy because it is not practical for millions of people to vote on every single law. Being a citizen means more than just living in a place. Citizenship describes the legal and social bond between a person and their country or community. Citizens have rights — protections and freedoms the state must guarantee — and responsibilities — duties citizens owe to their society in return. Key rights in a democracy include the right to vote, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and equality before the law. Key responsibilities include obeying the law, paying taxes that fund public services, respecting other people's rights, and taking part in civic life — for example by voting, volunteering, or staying informed about issues. Participation is essential. A democracy weakens when people stop engaging. Citizens can participate in many ways beyond voting: joining community groups, contacting elected representatives, signing petitions, peaceful protesting, attending public meetings, or even standing for election themselves. Why does this matter to you now? You may not be able to vote yet, but you are already a citizen. School councils, local youth parliaments, and online campaigns are real democratic spaces where young people shape decisions every day.
