A typical human cell is about 10–20 micrometres across. For centuries, scientists knew disease existed but could not see what caused it. Then, in 1676, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek peered through a tiny curved glass lens he had ground himself and saw living microorganisms for the very first time. He called them 'animalcules'.
