Level Playing Field: Gender and Sport Equity

Imagine two athletes. Both are equally talented. Both train just as hard. Yet one receives far more media coverage, higher prize money, and better facilities than the other — simply because of their gender. Is that fair? Before 1900, women were officially banned from competing in the Olympic Games. Today, women compete in every Olympic sport. But does that mean the playing field is truly level? **Equality vs. Equity — What Is the Difference?** Equality means giving everyone the exact same thing. Equity means giving people what they specifically need to have a fair chance. In sport, simply treating everyone 'the same' is not always fair, because different groups face different barriers. Gender equity in sport means ensuring that people of all genders have fair access to participation, resources, recognition, and opportunity — accounting for the real-world differences in how they are currently treated. **Why Does a Gap Exist?** Historically, many sports were designed by and for men. This created structural barriers — obstacles built into how sport is organised — that still affect participation today. Key barriers include: • **Funding and prize money:** In many sports, prize money and sponsorship deals are significantly lower for women than for men. For example, in some tennis Grand Slams equal prize money was only introduced in recent decades, and many other sports have not yet followed. • **Media coverage:** Research by organisations such as the Women's Sport Foundation has consistently found that women's sport receives a much smaller share of sports media coverage compared to men's sport. Less coverage means fewer role models and lower public interest — a cycle that is hard to break. • **Access and facilities:** Girls and women in many countries have less access to coaching, training facilities, and competitive pathways from an early age. • **Social and cultural expectations:** In some communities, gender stereotypes — fixed ideas about how different genders should behave — discourage girls from taking up certain sports or from pursuing sport seriously. • **Governance:** Until relatively recently, very few women held decision-making roles in national or international sports governing bodies, meaning policies rarely addressed gender imbalance. **Strategies for Change** Change is happening through several approaches: • **Policy and legislation:** Some governments have passed laws requiring equal investment in school sport for all genders (for example, Title IX in the United States, 1972). • **Targeted funding:** Governing bodies such as Sport England have ring-fenced — set aside — funding specifically for women's and girls' participation programmes. • **Media campaigns:** Campaigns like This Girl Can (Sport England, 2015) challenge stereotypes and celebrate women being active, reaching millions of people. • **Role models and visibility:** Increased broadcast coverage of events like the FIFA Women's World Cup and Women's Six Nations rugby exposes audiences to elite female athletes, inspiring younger generations. • **Inclusive coaching education:** Training coaches to recognise and address unconscious bias — assumptions people make without realising — helps create more welcoming sporting environments for everyone. Gender equity is not only about women and girls. Boys and men can also face barriers in sports coded as 'feminine', such as gymnastics, synchronised swimming, or dance. True equity means all genders can participate fully without stigma.
