is an umbrella term for any sport that has been modified — in its rules, equipment, or environment — so that people with a disability or health condition can participate fully. The modification might be small (a lower net in volleyball) or fundamental (replacing running with wheelchair propulsion). is a more specific term: it refers to organised, competitive sport for athletes with physical, visual, or intellectual s, most visibly through events such as the Paralympic Games, Deaflympics, and Special Olympics.
Why modify sports at all? Sport is a human right, not a privilege. Access to physical activity supports physical health, mental wellbeing, social connection, and personal identity. When a sport's original design unintentionally excludes people — for example, because it assumes the athlete can hear a starter's pistol or stand upright — modifying it removes a barrier rather than lowering a standard.
MODIFICATIONS COME IN THREE MAIN TYPES:
1. Equipment modifications — changing the tools of play. Wheelchair basketball uses the same hoop height as standing basketball but players use performance sports wheelchairs with anti-tip wheels and a tilted frame. Sitting volleyball uses a lower net (1.15 m for men) because players move and set from a seated position on the floor. Blind football uses a ball with an internal rattle so players can track it by sound.
2. Rule modifications — changing what players are allowed or required to do. In boccia, a precision target sport, players may use a ramp assistant to release the ball if they cannot throw independently. In wheelchair tennis, the ball is allowed to bounce twice before a return. Guide runners in visually impaired athletics must stay beside or slightly ahead of their athlete and may not pull or push them.
3. Environmental modifications — changing the playing space. Goalball courts have tactile boundary lines that players feel with their bodies. Paralympic swimming lanes are the same width as standard lanes, but 'tappers' — coaches using a long pole — signal the wall to athletes who cannot see.
: MAKING COMPETITION MEANINGFUL
Athletes with impairments are not a single homogeneous group. A sprinter with a single below-knee amputation has very different functional capacity from one with a spinal cord injury affecting both legs. Without a structured system, competition would be meaningless — the person with the mildest impairment would win every time.
Classification groups athletes by their relevant to that sport, not simply by their medical diagnosis. A classifier — a trained professional who may be a sports scientist, physician, or experienced coach — assesses how much the impairment actually affects the key actions of the sport. In Paralympic athletics, each class has a code: 'T' for track, 'F' for field, and a number indicating the impairment type and severity (e.g. T54 = wheelchair user with full arm and hand function; T11 = visually impaired, no light perception).
The goal of classification is : ensuring medals are won through training, skill, and tactics, not simply because of different impairment profiles among competitors.
WORLD-WIDE REACH
Adaptive sport is not only elite. Schools, community clubs, and recreational centres run adapted programmes for millions of people globally. Inclusive PE sessions use adaptive principles — for instance, allowing a student who uses a wheelchair to serve underarm in badminton — so every learner can work at the edge of their own ability.
Worked example
WORKED EXAMPLE — Analysing a modification in boccia:
Boccia is a precision throwing sport contested at the Paralympic Games. Athletes propel leather balls as close as possible to a white target ball called the jack.
Impairment context: Some boccia athletes have severe cerebral palsy affecting all four limbs. They cannot grip or throw the ball independently.
Modification made: Athletes in the BC3 class may use a ramp — a sloped channel — to release the ball. A 'ramp assistant' positions the ramp on instruction from the athlete, but must face away from the court and may never advise on tactics.
Why this is an equipment AND rule modification: The ramp replaces the physical action of throwing (equipment change). The rule that the assistant must face away preserves the athlete's cognitive and tactical control of the game (rule change).
Classification link: Only athletes with the most severe upper-limb impairment qualify for BC3. Athletes with less severe impairment compete in BC1 or BC2 and must propel the ball with their own body. This ensures BC3 athletes compete against others with similar functional profiles.
