In Tune or Out? The Secret of Pitch

Have you ever heard a singer hit a note that sounded slightly wrong — like a key that sticks on a piano? It makes you feel uncomfortable without knowing why. Your ears are very good at noticing when something is off. Today we are going to find out exactly what your ears are detecting. Before we start, try humming the highest sound you can make, then the lowest. Notice how different they feel in your throat and chest.

**Pitch** is how high or low a musical sound is. A bird's tweet is a high pitch. A big dog's bark is a low pitch. Every musical note — like C, D, E, F, G, A, or B — has its own exact pitch. Pitch is caused by vibration. When something vibrates (shakes back and forth) quickly, it makes a high-pitched sound. When it vibrates slowly, it makes a low-pitched sound. Pluck a thin guitar string and it vibrates fast — high pitch. Pluck a thick string and it vibrates slowly — low pitch. **Tuning** means setting each note to exactly the right pitch. When a note is in tune, it matches the correct pitch perfectly. When a note is out of tune, it is slightly too high (we call this **sharp**) or slightly too low (we call this **flat**). Musicians tune their instruments before they play. A guitarist turns small pegs at the top of the neck called tuning pegs. Turning a peg tightens or loosens the string, which changes how fast it vibrates — and that changes the pitch. A violin player does the same thing. A singer listens carefully and adjusts their voice until the pitch is right. **Worked Example — The Guitar String:** Imagine a guitar is supposed to play the note A. The correct pitch for A is 440 vibrations per second. If the string is too loose, it only vibrates 435 times per second — the note sounds flat (too low). The guitarist tightens the tuning peg. Now the string vibrates at exactly 440 times per second — the note is perfectly in tune.
