One, Two, Three, Four: How Many Performers?

Before a single note plays, the audience already knows something important — just by counting the performers! Think about a song you know well. Have you ever sung it alone, or with a friend? Did it sound different with two voices instead of one?

In music, we have special words that tell us exactly how many performers are playing or singing together. Learning these words helps you describe and understand music like a real musician. **Solo — 1 performer** A solo is when one person performs alone. The word 'solo' comes from the Italian word for 'alone'. A solo singer stands by themselves at the microphone. A solo violinist plays without anyone else. All the attention goes to just one person! **Duet — 2 performers** A duet is when two people perform together. 'Duet' comes from the Italian word for 'two'. You might hear two singers harmonising, or a piano player and a flautist playing a piece together. Both performers are equally important. **Trio — 3 performers** A trio is when three people perform together. 'Trio' comes from the Italian word for 'three'. A famous type of trio is a piano trio — one pianist, one violinist, and one cellist all playing the same piece. **Quartet — 4 performers** A quartet is when four people perform together.
