What Makes a Percussion Instrument?

A instrument makes sound when something is struck, shaken, or scraped. That action causes the instrument to — to shake back and forth very quickly. Those vibrations travel through the air as sound waves that reach your ears. The percussion family is huge. It is easier to understand if you split it into three groups based on how you play them. **Group 1 — Struck instruments** You hit these with a stick, mallet, or your hand. Examples: bass drum, snare drum, kettle drum (also called a timpani), xylophone, glockenspiel, and triangle. **Group 2 — Shaken instruments** You shake these to make the sound. Examples: maracas, shakers, and the tambourine (you can also hit a tambourine, so it belongs in more than one group!). **Group 3 — Scraped instruments** You drag a stick or finger across a ridged surface. Examples: the güiro (say: WEE-roh), which is a hollow gourd with ridges cut into it. Percussion instruments are also split into two bigger categories. A **** percussion instrument can play different notes — higher ones and lower ones. The xylophone and glockenspiel are good examples. On a xylophone, longer bars make low sounds and shorter bars make high sounds. An **** percussion instrument makes a sound at roughly one pitch only — it cannot easily play a tune. The bass drum and maracas are unpitched. Together, pitched and unpitched percussion instruments give music its rhythm, its energy, and sometimes its melody too.
