Three Brilliant Scripts

The letters you are reading right now are called the Latin alphabet. It is used for English, Spanish, French, and many other languages. But billions of people use completely different s every day. Let's meet three of them. **** — This script is used in Russian, Bulgarian, Serbian, and several other languages. It was created about 1,000 years ago and has 33 letters in its Russian form. Some letters look a little like Latin letters — for example, Cyrillic А sounds like the English 'A' — but others look quite different, such as Ж (which makes a sound like the 's' in 'measure'). Cyrillic is read from left to right, just like English. **Arabic** — is used for Arabic, Farsi (spoken in Iran), and Urdu (spoken in Pakistan and parts of India). It has 28 letters. One very important feature: Arabic is written and read from right to left. The letters also change shape depending on where they appear in a word — at the start, in the middle, or at the end. **** — This script is used for Hindi, Sanskrit, Nepali, and several other languages of South Asia. It has 47 or more basic characters. One special feature is the horizontal line that runs along the top of the letters, joining them together like a roof. Devanagari is read from left to right.
