Visual language uses images and symbols instead of words. Emoji are small digital pictures. The word 'emoji' comes from Japanese and means 'picture character'. They were created in Japan in 1999 by designer Shigetaka Kurita. Today there are over 3,600 official emoji, and billions of people use them every day. What makes emoji special is that they are universal. Universal means something that works for almost everyone, everywhere. A smiley face 😊 looks like happiness whether you live in Brazil, Nigeria, or Norway. A sun ☀️ looks like warmth wherever you are. Because emoji are based on images that many people recognise — faces, food, weather, animals — they can carry meaning across language barriers. A language barrier is when two people cannot understand each other because they speak different languages. Emoji work like pictographs. A pictograph is a picture that stands for an idea. Ancient Egyptians used pictographs called hieroglyphics. Road signs are pictographs too — a red triangle with an exclamation mark means 'danger' in many countries, no words needed. However, emoji are not a perfect universal language. Some emoji mean different things in different cultures. For example, the 👍 thumbs-up emoji means 'good' in many places, but in some cultures it is rude. This shows that even visual symbols are shaped by culture.
