Think about your favourite cartoon. The characters walk, talk, and change — they don't just stand still! Computers can do the same thing with code. Today you are going to write code that tells characters in a story exactly what to do, step by step.

When you code a story with animation, you use a block-based coding tool — a program where you snap pieces of code together like puzzle pieces. Here is how the key parts work. **Sprites** are the characters or objects in your story. You can pick a cat, a person, a rocket — almost anything! Each sprite gets its own set of code blocks. **Backgrounds** (also called backdrops) are the pictures behind your sprites. You change the backdrop to move from one scene to the next — for example, from a forest to a castle. **Code blocks** are the instructions you give each sprite. The most useful blocks for a story are: - **Motion blocks** — these make a sprite move across the screen (e.g. 'move 10 steps'). - **Looks blocks** — these change how a sprite appears, such as switching its costume or making it say something in a speech bubble. - **Event blocks** — these tell your code *when* to start. The block 'when green flag clicked' is like pressing play on your story. **Sequence** means putting your blocks in the right order. The computer reads your blocks from top to bottom, just like reading a book. If you put the blocks in the wrong order, the story will not make sense! A short animated story might have just three events: a character appears, moves across the screen, and then says something. That is enough to tell a real story with code.
