What Are Layers?

In a digital art program, a is like one invisible sheet of glass that you can draw on. You can have many layers stacked on top of each other. Together they make one finished picture on your screen. Each layer is separate. If you paint on Layer 2, you do not change anything on Layer 1. This means you can fix one part of your picture without ruining the rest. Layers also have an order. The layer at the top of the list covers everything below it. If you move a layer up or down, your picture changes. For example, if your cloud layer is below your sun layer, the sun will appear in front of the clouds. Swap them over and suddenly the clouds are in front. You can also hide a layer by turning it off. The layer is still there — you just cannot see it for now. Turn it back on and it reappears. Most digital art programs, such as Krita, GIMP, or Adobe Photoshop, show your layers in a panel called the . Each layer has a small picture called a so you can see what is on it at a glance.

Aisha is making a digital picture of a beach. She has three layers: • Layer 1 (bottom): yellow sand • Layer 2 (middle): blue sea • Layer 3 (top): a red crab Aisha decides the crab looks too big. She clicks on Layer 3 only and makes the crab smaller. The sand and sea on the other layers stay exactly the same — she has not touched them.
