What Was the Mughal Empire?

The Mughal was a large and powerful empire that covered most of South Asia — the area we call India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan today. It began in 1526 and lasted until 1857, so it existed for more than 300 years. The empire started when a ruler called Babur defeated the Sultan of Delhi at the Battle of Panipat in 1526. Babur was descended from two famous conquerors: Timur and Genghis Khan. This mix of Central Asian and Persian culture shaped the whole empire. After Babur came a line of powerful s. One of the most famous was Akbar the Great, who ruled from 1556 to 1605. Akbar was known for being fair to people of different religions. He allowed Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and others to practise their beliefs. This helped so many different people live together peacefully inside one empire. Akbar also built a new city called Fatehpur Sikri, which mixed Hindu and Islamic styles of — the art of designing buildings. Another great emperor was Shah Jahan, who ruled from 1628 to 1658. He is best remembered for building the Taj Mahal in Agra between 1632 and 1653. The Taj Mahal is a — a grand building made to hold the body of someone who has died — built for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. The Mughal Empire was famous for three things in particular: • Art and architecture — beautiful mosques, palaces, and miniature paintings. • Trade — merchants from Europe, Persia, and China all came to trade. • — especially under Akbar, many faiths lived side by side. By the early 1700s the empire began to weaken. Rulers after Aurangzeb (who died in 1707) struggled to keep such a huge empire together.
