The Ottoman Empire: A World-Changing Kingdom

Imagine a city sitting between two continents — Europe and Asia — where merchants, scholars, and travellers from dozens of countries meet every day. Goods like silk, spices, and gold pass through its busy markets. One empire controlled this crossroads for over 600 years. Can you guess which empire it was?

The Ottoman Empire began around 1299 in a small region of what is now the country of Turkey. It was founded by a ruler named Osman I — and the word 'Ottoman' comes from his name. Over the next two centuries, the empire grew enormously. In 1453, the Ottoman sultan Mehmed II captured Constantinople, one of the most important cities in the world. Constantinople had been the capital of the Byzantine Empire. By taking it, the Ottomans gained a hugely powerful city that sat between Europe and Asia. They renamed it Istanbul. At its peak in the 1500s and 1600s, the Ottoman Empire stretched across three continents — parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa. It included modern-day Turkey, Greece, Egypt, Hungary, and many more countries. Why was the empire so powerful? There are several reasons. First, the Ottoman army was very well organised. It included a special force of trained soldiers called the Janissaries, who were famous for their discipline and skill. Second, the Ottomans controlled major trade routes — the roads and sea paths that merchants used to move goods between Europe, Africa, and Asia. Whoever controlled these routes collected taxes on trade and became very wealthy. Third, the empire welcomed people of many different religions and cultures. Christians, Jews, and Muslims could all live and work under Ottoman rule, which helped keep peace across a huge and varied empire. Life inside the empire was rich and varied. Grand buildings called mosques were built for Islamic worship, and many are still standing today. Scholars studied mathematics, astronomy, and medicine. Artists created beautiful tiles, carpets, and calligraphy. The empire also had a complex government run from its capital, Istanbul, by the sultan — the name for the Ottoman ruler. The Ottoman Empire slowly weakened over time. By the 1800s, it had lost much of its territory. It finally ended in 1922, after World War One, when it was replaced by the modern country of Turkey.
