Raiders, Traders, Explorers: Meet the Vikings!

Imagine sailing across a stormy ocean in a wooden boat with no map and no compass — just the stars to guide you. You have no idea what land you will find. Would you dare? Around 1,200 years ago, the Vikings did exactly that. They were some of the most daring travellers the world has ever seen. Before we dive in, take a moment to think about this question.

The Vikings were people who came from Scandinavia — the lands we now call Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. They lived there from around 793 CE to 1066 CE, a period historians call the Viking Age. Why did they leave home? Scandinavia is mostly mountains and forests. Good farmland was very limited. As families grew larger, there was not enough land or food for everyone. So many Vikings looked across the sea for better opportunities. They were also excellent shipbuilders. Their longships were fast, light, and strong enough to survive both ocean waves and shallow rivers. Here is an important idea: Vikings were not just one thing. History books once showed them mainly as raiders — people who attacked monasteries and towns to steal gold. It is true that Viking raids did happen. In 793 CE, Vikings raided the monastery at Lindisfarne, a small island off the coast of northern England. This shocked people across Europe. But most Vikings were also traders. They sailed rivers deep into Russia, reaching as far as Constantinople (modern Istanbul) and Baghdad, exchanging furs, amber, and slaves for silk and silver. Viking traders set up towns and market places across Europe. And some Vikings were explorers. Erik the Red sailed west and reached Greenland around 985 CE. His son, Leif Erikson, went even further — landing in North America around 1000 CE, nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus. They called it Vinland. Vikings also settled peacefully in many places. They farmed in Iceland, set up kingdoms in England (called the Danelaw), and mixed with local people over time. Cause and effect: because farmland was scarce in Scandinavia, Vikings left home — and because they were brilliant sailors, they reached lands no other Europeans had found.
