Who Were the Tudors?

The Tudor period began in 1485 when Henry VII won the Battle of Bosworth Field and became King of England. Before him, two families — the Lancasters and the Yorks — had been fighting over the throne for 30 years. This conflict was called the Wars of the Roses. Henry VII ended the fighting by bringing the two sides together. He married Elizabeth of York, uniting the rival families at last. Five Tudor s ruled England in total: 1. Henry VII (1485–1509) — brought peace and filled the royal treasury with money. 2. Henry VIII (1509–1547) — famous for having six wives and for breaking away from the Catholic Church to start the Church of England. He did this partly because the Pope would not allow him to divorce his first wife. This change is called the . 3. Edward VI (1547–1553) — Henry's son, who became king at just nine years old. He was the first king raised as a . 4. Mary I (1553–1558) — Henry's daughter, who tried to bring England back to Catholicism. She is sometimes called 'Bloody Mary' because of the people she executed for their beliefs. 5. Elizabeth I (1558–1603) — one of England's most celebrated rulers. Under her , the arts and exploration flourished. She never married and became known as the 'Virgin Queen'. The Tudors changed England in huge ways. Henry VIII's break from Rome meant England had its own church — the Church of England — which still exists today. Explorers like Sir Francis Drake sailed around the world under Elizabeth I, bringing back goods and ideas from distant lands. Theatre and music also blossomed; the playwright William Shakespeare wrote many of his greatest plays during Elizabeth's reign.
