Ecosystems, Biomes, and the Factors That Shape Them
An is a community of living things — plants, animals, fungi, and micro-organisms — interacting with each other and with their non-living environment. The non-living parts include water, soil, sunlight, and air. Every organism in an ecosystem depends on others and on these physical conditions to survive. A is a much larger concept. It is a major regional zone on Earth, defined by a characteristic climate and a distinctive type of vegetation that has adapted to that climate. Think of a biome as a family of similar ecosystems spread across a vast area. The tropical rainforest biome, for example, stretches across parts of South America, Central Africa, and South-East Asia — different continents, but similar temperature and rainfall patterns produce similar forests in all three places. The non-living, physical factors in an environment are called s. The two most powerful abiotic factors that determine which biome appears in a place are temperature and (rainfall or snowfall). A simple rule: move further from the equator and temperatures generally drop; move into a rain shadow behind a mountain and precipitation falls sharply. These changes shift the biome. Here are the key biomes you need to know: • Tropical rainforest — found near the equator (e.g. the Amazon Basin, Congo Basin, Borneo). Hot all year (~26 °C), very high rainfall (>2,000 mm/year). Dense, multi-layered forest with enormous . • Tropical grassland / savanna — found between the tropics, further from the equator (e.g. East African savanna in Kenya and Tanzania). Hot, with distinct wet and dry seasons. Tall grasses and scattered trees; large herds of grazing mammals. • Desert — found around 30° north and south of the equator, or in continental interiors (e.g. Sahara, Arabian Desert, Atacama). Very low rainfall (<250 mm/year). Sparse, drought-adapted plants such as cacti and succulents. • Temperate deciduous forest — found in mid-latitudes (e.g. Western Europe, eastern North America). Mild temperatures, moderate rainfall spread across the year. Broad-leaved trees that shed leaves in autumn. • Boreal forest / taiga — found in a wide belt across Canada, Russia, and Scandinavia. Very cold winters, short cool summers. Dense coniferous (evergreen, cone-bearing) trees such as spruce and pine. • Tundra — found in Arctic regions (e.g. northern Canada, Siberia, Greenland's edges). Extremely cold, very low precipitation, permanently frozen subsoil (). Almost no trees; mosses, lichens, and low shrubs dominate. • Polar ice — found at the Arctic and Antarctic. Temperatures rarely rise above 0 °C. Almost no plants; life depends on the ocean. Biomes are not sharply fenced off from each other. They grade gradually into one another through transitional zones called s, where you find a mix of species from both neighbouring biomes. One important point: altitude works like latitude. Climb a tall tropical mountain such as Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and you pass through tropical forest, then temperate forest, then alpine tundra — similar zones to travelling from the equator toward the poles, but compressed into one mountainside.

Worked example — Reading a climate graph to identify a biome: Imagine you are given climate data for an unknown location: average monthly temperatures range from 24 °C to 28 °C all year (very little variation), and monthly rainfall totals are above 150 mm every single month, adding up to roughly 2,400 mm per year. There is no dry season. Step 1 — Check temperature: High and stable all year → this suggests a location near the equator, in the tropics. Step 2 — Check precipitation: Very high rainfall every month, no dry season → rules out savanna (which has a dry season) and desert (too much rain). Step 3 — Match to biome: Equatorial location + consistently high temperature + very high year-round rainfall = tropical rainforest biome. Conclusion: This mystery location is most likely within the tropical rainforest biome — perhaps the Congo Basin in central Africa, or the Amazon Basin in South America.
