**Where is the Amazon?**
The Amazon rainforest sits mostly in Brazil, but spreads into eight other South American countries including Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela. It covers approximately 5.5 million km² — roughly the size of Western Europe. It straddles the equator, which is why it has a : temperatures stay between 25°C and 30°C all year, and rainfall exceeds 2,000 mm annually, with no true dry season in most areas.
**The Four Layers**
The forest is structured in four distinct layers, each supporting different species and processes.
• The *emergent layer* sits at 40–70 m. Giant trees like the Brazil nut tree poke above the rest. Eagles and harpy hawks hunt here, catching strong winds to travel.
• The *canopy* (20–40 m) forms a dense 'roof' of overlapping leaves. It intercepts up to 80% of sunlight. Monkeys, sloths, and toucans live here. Because leaves block most rain, water drips slowly to the forest floor — reducing soil erosion.
• The *understorey* (5–20 m) is dim and humid. Smaller trees, ferns, and shade-tolerant plants grow here. Jaguars and tree frogs are adapted to low light.
• The *forest floor* receives less than 2% of sunlight. Decomposers — bacteria and fungi — break down dead material rapidly in the heat and moisture, recycling nutrients back to tree roots.
These layers are interdependent: remove the canopy, and the understorey loses shade; the soil dries out; decomposers slow down; nutrients vanish. The whole system can collapse.

The Amazon contains around 10% of all species on Earth — an estimated 3 million species in total, including 40,000 plant species, 1,300 bird species, and 3,000 types of fish. Many medicines, including treatments derived from rainforest plants, have been developed from this biodiversity. Around 400–500 Indigenous groups also call the Amazon home, depending on the forest for food, shelter, culture, and medicine.
**: Causes**
Deforestation means permanently clearing forest, usually by burning or logging. The main causes in the Amazon are:
1. *Commercial cattle ranching* — Brazil is the world's largest beef exporter. Cattle farms now cover about 80% of deforested land.
2. *Soy farming* — vast plantations grow soy, largely to feed livestock in Europe and China.
3. *Logging* — legal and illegal timber extraction for furniture and construction.
4. *Mining and road-building* — opening up previously remote areas.
**Deforestation: Consequences**
The consequences reach from local to global scale.
• *Locally*: soil erosion increases sharply once tree roots are removed; rivers silt up; Indigenous communities lose their land and livelihoods.
• *Regionally*: the Amazon generates its own rainfall through a process called ** — trees release water vapour that forms clouds. Losing trees reduces this 'flying river', cutting rainfall across South America and threatening farming thousands of kilometres away.
• *Globally*: trees store carbon. When they burn, CO₂ is released, accelerating climate change. The Amazon currently stores an estimated 150–200 billion tonnes of carbon.
Worked example

Strong answer: When trees are cut down, transpiration stops. Without trees releasing water vapour, fewer clouds form over the Amazon.
