Think of punctuation marks as a toolkit — each tool does a specific job. Here is your master reference. **Full stop ( . )** — ends a complete sentence. It is a full stop in British English and a period in American English. **Comma ( , )** — signals a brief pause. Use a comma to separate items in a list ('She packed a tent, a sleeping bag, a torch, and a map.'), to join two main clauses with a coordinating conjunction ('The storm was fierce, but the tent held firm.'), and to separate a subordinate clause from the main clause when the subordinate clause comes first ('Although it rained all night, they slept well.'). **Semicolon ( ; )** — stronger than a comma, weaker than a full stop. Use it to link two closely related s without a conjunction: 'The forecast promised sunshine; it delivered hail.' Both sides of the semicolon must be able to stand alone as sentences. **Colon ( : )** — introduces something: a list, a quotation, or an explanation. The text before the colon must be a complete clause: 'She had one ambition: to reach the summit before dawn.' **Dash ( — ) and parentheses ( )** — both add extra information, but they create different effects. A dash is bold and emphasises the aside: 'The final answer — if you trust the data — changes everything.' Parentheses are quieter; they whisper the aside to the reader (the main sentence still reads smoothly without them). **Apostrophe ( ' )** — has exactly two jobs: to mark a ('do not' → 'don't') and to show ('the explorer's map', 'the explorers' maps').
