Here are four of the most powerful ones. **Pattern 1 — 'i before e except after c' (and its limits)** The classic rule states: write 'ie' in most words (*believe*, *fierce*, *grief*), but write 'ei' after the letter 'c' (*receive*, *ceiling*, *deceive*). The rule works reliably for the long 'ee' sound. However, when the vowel pair makes a long 'ay' sound, you usually write 'ei' regardless of the preceding letter: *eight*, *weight*, *neighbour*, *vein*.
