Imagine you are exploring deep inside a cave. Your torch flickers across the rocky wall — and there, painted in red and black, is a perfect picture of a galloping horse. No one has touched it for thousands of years. Who made it? How? And why? Cave art is one of the oldest mysteries in human history. Before we dive in, try the warm-up question below.

Cave art is artwork made by early humans on the walls, ceilings, and floors of caves. The oldest known cave paintings are over 45,000 years old. That means they were made long before writing, wheels, or farming existed. Where in the world? Cave art has been found on every continent except Antarctica. Some of the most famous examples are in Lascaux in France, Altamira in Spain, and Sulawesi in Indonesia. What did they paint? Early artists mostly painted the animals they knew — bison, horses, deer, mammoths, and rhinoceroses. They also made handprints by pressing a hand against the wall and blowing pigment around it. Geometric shapes — dots, lines, and grids — appear too. What did they use? Artists ground up natural materials to make pigment (coloured powder). Red and yellow came from a rock called ochre. Black came from charcoal (burnt wood). They mixed pigment with water, animal fat, or plant juice to make paint. They applied it with their fingers, animal-hair brushes, moss pads, or by blowing it through hollow bones. Why did they make it? We cannot ask them, so historians and archaeologists study the clues. Here are the main ideas: • To tell stories about hunts and the animals they saw every day. • As part of rituals or ceremonies — asking for luck in a hunt, for example. • To mark territory or communicate with other groups. • Simply because making art felt meaningful — just as it does for us today. One amazing detail: many caves are very dark and hard to reach. Artists carried small stone lamps burning animal fat to light their way deep underground. Making art was clearly worth the effort.
