The Renaissance: A Great Burst of Art!

Look at this painting of a woman with a gentle, mysterious smile. Her face looks almost real — like a photograph. But this was painted over 500 years ago, using only brushes and paint! How do you think the artist made it look so lifelike? Think about it for a moment before we find out.

About 600 years ago, something exciting happened in Europe — especially in Italy. Artists, thinkers, and scientists started looking at the world in a fresh new way. This period is called the Renaissance (say it: REN-uh-sahns). The word comes from French and means 'rebirth'. People were rediscovering ideas from ancient Greece and Rome, and mixing them with new discoveries of their own. Before the Renaissance, paintings often looked flat and stiff. Figures in artworks didn't always look like real people. Renaissance artists changed everything. They studied the human body carefully — sometimes even studying bones and muscles — so they could paint and sculpt people who looked truly alive. Three ideas made Renaissance art special: 1. REALISM — Artists tried to paint things exactly as they looked in real life. Faces showed real feelings. Bodies looked like real bodies. 2. PERSPECTIVE — This is a clever trick for showing depth. Objects further away are painted smaller, so a painting looks like you could step right into it. 3. LIGHT AND SHADOW — Artists used light and dark carefully to make figures look three-dimensional, as if light is shining on them from one side. Three of the most famous Renaissance artists are Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. Leonardo painted the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome and carved the giant marble sculpture called David. Raphael was famous for beautiful paintings of gentle, graceful figures. The Renaissance started in Italy around the 1400s and spread across Europe. It changed art — and how people saw the world — forever.
