For grown-ups
Companion summary
Have you ever felt your arm go wobbly after carrying something really heavy for a long time? Every time you kick a ball, climb stairs, or even blink, your muscles are quietly working for you. Your body has over 600 muscles, and the hardest-working one is your heart — it never takes a break. When you finish, try squeezing your fist tight and feeling exactly which part of your arm changes shape.

Feel Your Power!
Hold your arm out straight with your palm facing up. Now slowly bend your elbow and bring your hand up toward your shoulder. Do it again and this time place your other hand on the front of your upper arm. Did you feel something? There is a lump that appears and then disappears as you move. That lump is a muscle doing its job. What do you think is happening inside your arm right now?
