Imagine you own a small clothing factory. A supplier offers you a very cheap deal — but you find out the workers in that supplier's factory are paid almost nothing and work in dangerous conditions. Accepting the deal would increase your profits. Rejecting it would cost you money. What do you do? Now add this: you are a person of deep religious faith. Does that change your answer? Every major world religion contains teachings about how people should treat one another — and those teachings do not stop at the door of a shop, office, or factory. Business ethics means the moral principles that guide how a business behaves: how it treats workers, customers, competitors, and the environment. **Islam and honest trade.** The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was himself a merchant before he received revelation. Islamic teaching places great emphasis on honesty in trade. Charging riba (an Arabic word meaning interest on a loan) is forbidden in classical Islamic law because it was seen as exploiting people in need. Islamic finance has developed special contracts — such as profit-sharing arrangements called mudarabah — so that Muslims can invest and do business without charging or paying interest. Fairness in weights and measures is also commanded in the Qur'an (Surah 83:1-3), meaning sellers must not cheat customers by giving them less than they pay for. **Christianity and the common good.** Many Christian thinkers, particularly in the Catholic social teaching tradition, argue that business has a responsibility not just to shareholders but to the whole of society. The principle of the common good means decisions should benefit everyone, not just the wealthy few. The idea of a just wage — paying workers enough to live a dignified life — comes from this tradition. Protestant reformers like John Calvin also shaped attitudes to work, arguing that honest labour and careful stewardship of resources honoured God. **Judaism and fair dealing.** Jewish business ethics are grounded in the Torah and later Rabbinic writings. The concept of ona'ah (overcharging or deceiving a customer) is explicitly forbidden in the Talmud. Workers must be paid on time — Deuteronomy 24:15 says a worker's wage should not be withheld overnight. The principle of tikkun olam (repairing the world) encourages businesses to consider their wider impact on society and the environment. **Hinduism and dharma in business.** Dharma means 'righteous duty' or 'right action'. In a business context, following dharma means acting honestly, keeping promises, and not harming others for personal gain. The Arthashastra, an ancient Indian text on statecraft and economics, discusses the responsibilities of merchants to act fairly. **A shared thread.** Across these traditions, a common theme emerges: profit is not wrong, but the way profit is made matters deeply. Greed, exploitation, and deception are condemned. Honesty, fair wages, care for the vulnerable, and responsibility to the wider community are consistently valued. **Tension with modern business.** Critics argue that the pressure to maximise profit in competitive global markets makes it very hard to follow these ideals all the time. Supporters reply that businesses built on trust, fairness, and good reputation are more sustainable in the long run.
