What Happens Next? Life After Death Across Worldviews

Across every culture in human history, people have asked the same question: what happens to us when we die? Some of the oldest known human burials — dating back over 100,000 years — include objects placed alongside the dead, suggesting people believed something continued after death. Think about that for a moment. Long before writing existed, human beings were already wondering about life after death. Before you read on, consider this: if you had to imagine what happens after death with no guidance from anyone, what would feel most logical or comforting to you? Keep that thought in mind as you discover what different worldviews have actually taught.

Different worldviews offer very different answers to the question of life after death. Here are six major perspectives: **Christianity** Most Christians believe in resurrection — that after death, the soul is judged by God and the body will ultimately be raised to new life. Those who have faith and lived righteously enter heaven, a state of eternal closeness with God. Many traditions also teach that those who reject God face hell, a permanent separation from God. Some Catholic and Orthodox Christians believe in purgatory — a temporary state of purification before heaven. **Islam** Islam teaches that after death, the soul enters a waiting state called Barzakh until the Day of Judgement (Yawm al-Qiyamah). On that day, Allah judges every person's deeds. The righteous enter Jannah (paradise), described as a place of beauty and peace. Others face Jahannam (hell). Like Christianity, Islam emphasises a single life followed by judgement and an eternal destination. **Judaism** Jewish belief about the afterlife is more varied than in Christianity or Islam, because Judaism focuses more on how to live this life. Some Jewish traditions accept a concept of Olam Ha-Ba ('the World to Come'), a future state of blessedness. Others emphasise resurrection at the end of time. There is less agreement in Judaism on the details of what happens after death than in many other worldviews. **Hinduism** Hinduism teaches samsara — the cycle of death and rebirth, also called reincarnation. The soul (atman) is reborn into a new body after death. The form of the next life is shaped by karma — the moral weight of actions in previous lives. Good karma can lead to a better rebirth; harmful actions lead to a worse one. The ultimate goal is moksha — liberation from the cycle of samsara altogether — when the atman reunites with Brahman, the universal ultimate reality. **Buddhism** Buddhism also teaches a cycle of rebirth, but with an important difference from Hinduism: Buddhism does not believe in a permanent, unchanging soul. Instead, what is reborn is a stream of consciousness shaped by karma. The goal is to escape suffering and the cycle of rebirth by reaching nirvana — a state of complete peace, freedom from desire and suffering. The Buddha taught that clinging to the idea of a fixed self is itself one of the causes of suffering. **Secular / Humanist Worldview** Many people who do not hold religious beliefs take a secular or humanist position: that death is the permanent end of individual consciousness. There is no soul that continues, no judgement, no rebirth. For humanists, this makes life in the present world even more meaningful — because it is the only life we have. The 'legacy' a person leaves — through relationships, work, and impact on others — is the closest thing to continuation.
