I believe this because freedom of conscience — the right to decide your own beliefs — is something most moral and legal systems around the world recognise as fundamental to human dignity. Even religious traditions that claim to hold absolute truth, such as Christianity and Islam, have thinkers within them who argue that a forced conversion means nothing spiritually. I'm aware that some communities believe protecting shared religious identity matters more than individual choice, and I've thought about that — but I still land on the side of individual freedom.'
