Faiths and the Natural World

Many religions teach that the Earth is precious and that humans have a special responsibility to look after it. This idea is called — being a careful guardian of the natural world. In Christianity, many believers say that God created the world and gave humans the role of s. The Bible says humans should 'tend and keep' the Earth (Genesis 2:15). This means caring for it, not destroying it. In Islam, the idea of (say: ka-LEE-fah) means that humans are trustees of the Earth on behalf of Allah. The Qur'an teaches that people must not cause damage or waste. Wasting water, for example, is considered wrong even if a river is nearby. In Hinduism, nature is seen as sacred — meaning deeply holy and worthy of respect. Many Hindus believe God is present in all living things, so harming the natural world is like harming the divine. The Chipko movement in India, where Hindu villagers hugged trees to stop them being cut down in the 1970s, is one famous example of this belief in action. In Judaism, the concept of means 'repairing the world'. Jews are taught to make the world a better and fairer place — and that includes protecting the environment. There is also a rule called (say: bal tash-KHEET) which means 'do not destroy', forbidding needless waste or damage to nature. In Buddhism, a key teaching is compassion for all living beings. Buddhists try to live simply and avoid harming any creature. Many Buddhist communities plant trees, clean rivers, and reduce waste as a direct result of their faith. All of these faiths share a common message: the Earth is not ours to damage. We are here to protect it for those who come after us.
