What kind of place do you think this is? People from many different faiths create beautiful art to express what is most important to them. This art is called sacred art — and it comes in hundreds of surprising forms around the world.

Sacred art is art that is made for religious reasons. The word 'sacred' means something that is holy — deeply special and connected to God, gods, or a higher power. Sacred art helps believers feel close to what they believe in. It can teach stories, create a mood of calm and respect, or act as a focus for prayer. Different faiths use art in different ways. **Christianity** — Many Christian churches have stained-glass windows. These are pictures made from pieces of coloured glass fitted together. They show scenes from the Bible and flood the room with coloured light. Painted icons are also important in Orthodox Christianity. An icon is a small, careful painting of Jesus, Mary, or a saint, used as a focus for prayer. **Islam** — Islamic sacred art often uses beautiful writing called calligraphy. This is a skilled way of writing words from the Qur'an in flowing, decorative shapes. Mosques are also decorated with geometric patterns — shapes such as stars and interlocking polygons that repeat in complex, beautiful designs. Because many Muslim scholars have taught that pictures of people should not be used in worship spaces, patterns and calligraphy became highly developed art forms. **Hinduism** — Hindu temples and homes often contain murtis. A murti is a sculpture or image of a deity (a god or goddess) such as Ganesha or Lakshmi. Worshippers use murtis as a focus when they pray. Rangoli is another form of sacred art — colourful patterns made on the floor from rice, sand, or coloured powder, especially during festivals like Diwali. **Judaism** — Jewish sacred art includes the decoration of Torah scrolls and the objects used in worship. The menorah (a branched candleholder) is a well-known sacred symbol. Synagogues are often decorated with geometric and plant-based patterns, and beautifully embroidered cloth covers the Torah scroll. **Buddhism** — Buddhist sacred art includes thangkas — painted cloth scrolls showing the Buddha or other important figures — and mandalas, which are detailed circular patterns used to help meditation.
