The Living Guru: Sikhism's Holy Book

Imagine you owned a book that was so precious your whole community treated it like a person — not just an object. They would dress it, give it a bed to sleep in, and bow before it every day. Does that sound strange? For Sikhs around the world, this is exactly how they feel about their holy scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib. Think about this: what would make a book so important that it becomes the most honoured thing in a place of worship?

The Guru Granth Sahib is the holy scripture of Sikhism. Scripture means a collection of sacred, or deeply holy, writings. It is written mostly in a language called Gurmukhi and contains hymns, prayers, and poems. These hymns teach Sikhs about God, how to live a good life, and how to treat others with kindness and equality. The book was put together over many years. The tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, declared in 1708 that there would be no more human Gurus after him. Instead, the Guru Granth Sahib itself would become the eternal, or everlasting, Guru for all Sikhs. This means Sikhs believe the book carries the living spirit and wisdom of God. It is not just a guide — it IS their Guru. Because of this belief, Sikhs treat the Guru Granth Sahib as if it were a living person. In a Gurdwara — the Sikh place of worship — the scripture rests on a special raised platform called a Manji Sahib, covered by a canopy called a Palki Sahib. A person called a Granthi reads from it and fans it with a whisk called a Chauri, just as servants once fanned royalty. At night, the book is carefully 'put to rest' in a special room, and each morning it is ceremonially 'woken up' and carried in procession to its throne. When Sikhs enter the Gurdwara, they bow before the Guru Granth Sahib as a sign of deep respect. Nobody sits with their feet pointing toward it. Sikhs cover their heads in its presence. These actions show that the book is at the very centre of Sikh life and worship.
