Special Buildings: Places of Worship Around the World

Imagine you have a place that feels really special to you — somewhere you feel calm, safe, or happy. Maybe it is your bedroom, a garden, or a grandparent's kitchen. Now think: what makes it feel special? Is it the people there? The things inside it? The way it looks? Many people around the world have special buildings where they go to worship — to pray, reflect, or celebrate their faith. These buildings look very different from each other, but they all share one big idea: they are set apart as sacred, which means holy or deeply important.

A place of worship is a building where people of a particular faith gather to pray, celebrate, learn, and be together as a community. Different religions have their own special buildings, and each one has features — parts or details — that show what that faith believes. **The Church (Christianity)** Christians worship in a church. Many churches have a tall tower called a steeple, colourful stained-glass windows that tell Bible stories, and an altar at the front — a table used during religious services. Inside, rows of seats called pews face the front so people can listen to the service. **The Mosque (Islam)** Muslims worship in a mosque. You can often spot a mosque by its dome — a rounded roof — and a tall thin tower called a minaret, from which a call to prayer is announced. Inside, there are no chairs; worshippers pray on the floor, facing the direction of Makkah (a holy city in Saudi Arabia). There are no pictures of people or animals inside — instead you see beautiful patterns and Arabic writing. **The Synagogue (Judaism)** Jewish people worship in a synagogue. A holy scroll called the Torah — the Jewish holy text — is kept in a special cupboard called the Ark. A lamp called the Ner Tamid burns above the Ark and is never switched off. It reminds worshippers that God is always present. **The Mandir (Hinduism)** Hindus worship in a mandir, sometimes called a Hindu temple. A mandir has a tall ornate tower called a shikhara above the main shrine. Inside, there are statues or images of deities — gods and goddesses — decorated with flowers and lights. Worshippers bring offerings such as food or flowers. **The Gurdwara (Sikhism)** Sikhs worship in a gurdwara. Above the entrance flies the Nishan Sahib, a triangular orange flag with the Sikh symbol on it. Inside, the Guru Granth Sahib — the Sikh holy scripture — is treated with great respect, placed on a raised platform under a canopy. A langar (a free community kitchen) is part of every gurdwara, where everyone is welcome to share a meal. **Why Are These Buildings Important?** Places of worship are not just about the building itself. They are community hubs — places where people come together, support each other, and mark important moments like births, weddings, and funerals. For believers, these buildings are sacred spaces that help them feel close to what they believe in.
