Imagine you arrive at school and there are no rules at all. Anyone can take your things. No one has to listen when you speak. It sounds chaotic, doesn't it? Schools have rights and responsibilities to make sure everyone feels safe, heard, and treated fairly. Today you will find out what those words really mean — and why both of them matter.

A right is something you are entitled to — something that should always be provided for you. At school, every child has the right to learn in a safe environment, to be treated with respect, and to be listened to by teachers and classmates. A responsibility is something you must do to help make that right possible for everyone. Rights and responsibilities are always connected. If you have the right to learn without being disturbed, then you also have the responsibility to let others learn without disturbing them. Think of it like this: rights are the 'what you deserve' and responsibilities are the 'what you do in return'. School rights include: • The right to feel safe from bullying or unkind behaviour. • The right to get help from a teacher when you need it. • The right to be included and to join in activities. School responsibilities include: • The responsibility to treat classmates kindly. • The responsibility to follow school rules so everyone stays safe. • The responsibility to look after shared equipment, like books and pencils, so others can use them too. Rights and responsibilities belong to everyone in the school — pupils, teachers, and staff. When everyone takes their responsibilities seriously, everyone's rights are protected.
