Make a Difference: Being an Active Citizen

Imagine you notice that the park near your school is covered in litter. Some children walk past and ignore it. Others pick up a piece of litter and put it in the bin. One child organises a clean-up day and tells friends to join in. Think about those three different reactions. Which child do you think makes the biggest difference — and why?

A citizen is a person who belongs to a community — that might be your class, your school, your town, or even the whole world. An active citizen is someone who does not just watch things happen. They take action to make life better for others around them. Active citizens notice problems and think, 'What can I do to help?' They do not have to be adults or famous. Children are active citizens every day. There are three key steps to being an active citizen: 1. NOTICE — Pay attention to what is happening around you. Is something unfair? Is someone left out? Does something need fixing or improving? 2. CARE — Think about how the problem affects other people. Put yourself in their shoes. Feeling empathy — understanding how someone else feels — helps you want to act. 3. ACT — Do something! Action can be big or small. You might write a letter, raise money, join a group, speak up in class, volunteer your time, or simply be kind to someone who is struggling. Worked Example: Amara is ten years old. She notices that some children in her school have no one to sit with at lunch. She cares because she knows how lonely that feels. She acts by starting a 'Friendship Bench' — a special seat where anyone can sit if they want company. Soon, other children join her idea. That is active citizenship in action!
