Cracking the Tab Code

Tab notation (short for tablature) is a way of writing music for ed instruments like guitar or ukulele. Instead of using music notes on a staff, tab uses lines and numbers. Each line stands for one string on the guitar. A standard guitar has six strings. In tab, the bottom line is the thickest string (the lowest-sounding one), and the top line is the thinnest string (the highest-sounding one). Think of it like looking down at a guitar lying flat in front of you. The numbers on the lines tell you which to press. A fret is one of the small metal strips across the neck of the guitar. When you press a string down behind a fret and pluck it, you get a different note. • The number 0 means you do not press any fret — you just play the string open. • The number 1 means press the string at fret 1 (the fret closest to the top of the neck). • The number 3 means press the string at fret 3. You always read tab from left to right, just like reading a sentence. When two numbers are stacked on top of each other on different lines at the same place, you play both strings at the same time. Here is a simple rule to remember: Line + Number = which string and where to press.

Look at this short tab: e |---0---| B |---1---| G |---0---| D |---2---| A |---3---| E |---0---| Read it from left to right. Each line has a letter at the start — that is the name of that string. The numbers tell you what to do: • The bottom E string: play it open (0). • The A string: press fret 3. • The D string: press fret 2. • The G string: play it open (0). • The B string: press fret 1. • The top e string: play it open (0). If you did all of this on a real guitar, you would be playing a G major chord! You read each note in order from left to right across the tab.
