The Story of the Piano
Around the year 1700, an Italian instrument maker named Bartolomeo Cristofori was working in Florence, Italy. His job was to look after the musical instruments owned by a very wealthy family called the Medici. He was bothered by the same problem you thought about in the starter — the could only play at one volume.
Cristofori had a brilliant idea. Inside a harpsichord, small hooks called plectra pluck the strings when you press a key. Plucking always gives the same force, so the volume never changes. Cristofori replaced the plucking system with small felt-covered hammers. When you press a key softly, the hammer taps the string gently and makes a quiet sound. When you press hard, the hammer strikes strongly and the sound is loud. The harder you press, the louder the note.
Cristofori called his invention the 'gravicembalo col piano e forte', which is Italian for 'harpsichord with soft and loud'. Over time people shortened this name to 'pianoforte', and then just 'piano'.
The first pianos were built around 1700, but they were quite small and quiet. Over the next 150 years, makers improved the design in three big ways.
First, the frame. Early pianos had a wooden frame, which could only hold strings under low tension. By around 1825, makers began using a . Iron is much stronger than wood, so strings could be pulled much tighter. Tighter strings vibrate with more energy and make a louder, richer sound.
Second, the number of keys. Cristofori's first piano had about 54 keys. Today a standard concert has 88 keys, giving musicians a much wider range of notes from very low to very high.
Third, the size and shape. Piano makers discovered that longer strings produce deeper, fuller bass sounds. Grand pianos, which are large and horizontal, have long strings and a powerful sound perfect for concert halls. s, which stand vertically to save space, became popular in homes during the 1800s because they fitted into ordinary rooms.
By the mid-1800s the piano had become the most popular instrument in Europe and beyond. Composers such as Ludwig van Beethoven, Frédéric Chopin, and Franz Liszt wrote music that would have been impossible on a harpsichord — music that moved from a thundering roar to the softest whisper.
