Wigs, Palaces, and Big Tunes: The Classical Music Era

Close your eyes for a moment and imagine you are sitting in a grand palace hall. Candles flicker on the walls. A group of musicians begins to play — violins, flutes, and a harpsichord. The music is elegant and very organised, like a beautiful pattern of sound. Have you ever heard music like this? It might have appeared in a film, a TV advert, or even a cartoon! This type of music is called Classical music, and today you are going to discover where it comes from, who made it, and what makes it special.

Music historians divide the history of Western music into different periods, a bit like chapters in a book. The Classical era lasted from around 1750 to 1820. During this time, composers — the people who write music — created pieces that were clear, balanced, and elegant. Think of it like a neat, tidy room where everything is in exactly the right place. The Classical era came after a period called the Baroque era and before a period called the Romantic era. Each era has its own sound and style, just like different decades of pop music sound different today. Three of the most famous Classical composers are: • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) — a child genius from Austria who began performing at age 5. He wrote over 600 pieces, including symphonies, operas, and piano concertos. His Symphony No. 40 is one of the most recognised pieces ever written. • Joseph Haydn (1732–1809) — also from Austria, Haydn helped invent the symphony as we know it. He wrote 104 symphonies! He is sometimes called the 'Father of the Symphony'. • Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) — born in Germany, Beethoven began in the Classical era and later helped start the Romantic era. Amazingly, he wrote some of his greatest music, including his famous Ninth Symphony, after he had gone almost completely deaf. What does Classical music sound like? Here are its key features: 1. Clear melodies — tunes that are easy to follow and remember. 2. Balance and structure — music is organised into neat sections, like verses in a poem. 3. Orchestras — large groups of instruments playing together, including strings (violins, cellos), woodwind (flutes, oboes), brass (horns), and percussion (drums). 4. Dynamics — the music moves between loud and soft in a planned, controlled way. 5. Forms like the symphony and sonata — a symphony is a long piece for a full orchestra, usually in four parts called movements.
