Lines, Spaces, and the Magic Clef

Imagine you write a secret code for your friend. Your friend must read it and know exactly what to do. Music uses a code like that! Composers — people who write music — have to write down every sound so other musicians can play it. But how do you write a sound? Think about it for a moment. Music has its own special writing system, and today you are going to crack part of that code.

When musicians write music down, they use a system called notation. Notation is a set of symbols that tells a musician what note to play and how long to play it. The foundation of this system is called the stave (also spelled 'staff'). A stave is a set of five horizontal lines running across the page. Every note in a piece of music is written on or between these lines. The five lines create four gaps between them. Musicians call these gaps spaces. So a stave has five lines and four spaces — nine positions in total where a note can sit. Now here is the clever part. A note written on a higher line sounds higher in pitch — pitch is how high or low a sound is. A note written on a lower line sounds lower. The stave lets you see the shape of the music: notes going up mean the melody goes higher, and notes going down mean the melody goes lower. But the lines on their own do not tell you which exact note is which. That is the job of the clef. A clef is a symbol placed at the very start of the stave. It acts like a key — it unlocks the meaning of every line and space. The most common clef is the treble clef. It looks like a tall, curly symbol that wraps around the second line from the bottom. The treble clef tells you that the second line from the bottom is the note G. Because of this, the treble clef is sometimes called the G clef. Once you know that one line is G, you can work out all the other notes from there. Most melodies for voices, violin, flute, and the right hand of a piano are written in the treble clef.
