The Four Instrument Families

Musicians group instruments into families based on HOW they make their sound. There are four main families. 🎻 STRINGS String instruments make sound when their strings . Vibrate means to move back and forth very quickly. You can pluck the strings with your fingers, or draw a — a long stick with horsehair — across them. Examples: violin, cello, guitar, harp. 🎵 WOODWIND Woodwind instruments make sound when a player blows air through or across them. This makes a column of air inside the instrument vibrate. Many woodwind instruments use a thin piece of wood called a that wobbles when you blow. Examples: flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone. (Saxophones are made of metal but still belong to the woodwind family because of how they use a reed!) 🎺 BRASS Brass instruments are usually made of metal. The player buzzes their lips together into a to make the air inside vibrate. The instrument's long tube shapes the sound. Examples: trumpet, trombone, French horn, tuba. 🥁 Percussion instruments make sound when you hit, shake, or scrape them. They are the heartbeat of the music!
