Neither of you has met before. The call connects. Silence. What do you say? This is the exact situation a language exchange creates — and how well you have prepared makes all the difference between an awkward silence and an energising conversation. Succeeding in a language exchange rests on three pillars: a strong introduction, thoughtful questions, and cultural etiquette. **Pillar 1 — Your Introduction** Your opening statement does two jobs at once: it gives your partner information and it models the kind of conversation you want to have. A thin introduction ('Hi, my name is Alex') invites only a thin reply. A rich introduction gives your partner several things to respond to. A strong introduction covers: your name and age; where you live (a brief, vivid detail — not just the country); one or two genuine interests; and your specific reason for wanting this exchange. The last point matters because it shows respect for your partner's time. **Pillar 2 — Open Questions** An open question cannot be answered with a single word. It typically begins with 'What', 'How', 'Why', 'Tell me about', or 'What do you think of'. Open questions keep a conversation alive and signal that you are genuinely curious about your partner. Compare these two questions: • Closed: 'Do you like music?' → Answer: 'Yes.' • Open: 'What kind of music is popular where you live, and do you listen to it yourself?' → Answer: a whole paragraph. Before any exchange session, prepare at least three open questions. This preparation removes the pressure of inventing questions on the spot. **Pillar 3 — Etiquette** Etiquette means the accepted rules of polite behaviour in a particular context. In a language exchange, etiquette involves: taking turns equally (roughly 50 % of each session in each language); correcting gently and only when asked or agreed in advance; being patient with mistakes — errors are how learning happens; and being sensitive to the fact that topics considered normal in one culture may be uncomfortable in another. One practical tip: agree at the start of each session how you will handle corrections. Some people want immediate feedback; others prefer a list at the end.
