Who Speaks What? Ranking the World's Languages by Speakers

Here is a puzzle: about 8 billion people live on Earth, and those people speak more than 7,000 different languages. But just a handful of those languages are spoken by billions of people, while most are spoken by only a few thousand. If you had to guess, which language do you think the greatest number of people in the world can actually speak and use — including people who learned it as a second language at school or for work? Is it the language you speak at home? You might be surprised by the answer.

Before we look at the rankings, we need to understand two very different ways of counting speakers. **Native speakers** are people who learned a language as their very first language in childhood — it is sometimes called their mother tongue. **Total speakers** (also called all speakers) includes native speakers PLUS every person who learned that language later as a second, third, or additional language. British colonial expansion from the 17th to 20th centuries spread English across Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania. Later, the economic and cultural influence of the United States made English the dominant language of international business, science, and the internet.
