How to Read a Bilingual Sign

A carries the same information written in two languages. The word 'bilingual' comes from 'bi' (meaning two) and 'lingua' (meaning language). So bilingual simply means 'two languages'. Bilingual signs appear all over the world. In Wales, every road sign is written in Welsh and English. In Canada, signs in Quebec appear in French and English. In Singapore, signs often appear in English, Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil — that is even more than two languages! When you look at a bilingual sign, use these three detective steps: 1. LOOK at the layout. The two languages are usually placed next to each other, or one above the other. They are often separated by a line or a gap. 2. SPOT the clues. Numbers, arrows, pictures, and s mean the same thing in every language. A picture of a knife and fork tells you it is a restaurant, whatever language the words are in. 3. MATCH the words. If you know one language on the sign, you can work out what the other language means. For example, if you see 'Welcome / Croeso', and you know 'Welcome' is English, you can guess that 'Croeso' means welcome in Welsh. Bilingual signs help people feel included and make sure everyone can understand important information. They show respect for different languages and communities.

Look at this bilingual sign from a Welsh train station: TOILETS TOILEDAU Step 1 — Layout: The two words are stacked one above the other. They are clearly a pair. Step 2 — Clues: There are no pictures here, but the words look similar. 'TOILEDAU' has many of the same letters as 'TOILETS'. Step 3 — Match: Because we know 'TOILETS' is English, we can work out that 'TOILEDAU' is the Welsh word for toilets. Result: Even without speaking Welsh, we understood the sign by using our detective steps!
