Hello, World! Greetings from Every Corner of the Globe

Did you know that every single person on Earth says 'hello' — but in thousands of different ways? Right now, someone in Tokyo is saying 'Konnichiwa', someone in Cairo is saying 'Marhaba', and someone in Mexico City is saying 'Hola'. They all mean the same thing: hello! Think about a time you met someone new. What was the very first thing you said? A greeting is the first bridge between two people.

A greeting is a word or phrase you use when you meet someone. Every language has its own greeting, and some cultures have special customs that go with them — like a bow, a wave, or pressing your palms together. Here are greetings from six parts of the world: 🇬🇧 English (UK, USA, Australia and more): 'Hello' or 'Hi' — used any time of day. 🇪🇸 Spanish (Spain, Mexico, much of South America): 'Hola' — said OH-lah. Spanish is spoken by over 500 million people, making it one of the world's most widely spoken languages. 🇫🇷 French (France, parts of Africa, Canada and more): 'Bonjour' — said bon-ZHOOR. It literally means 'good day'. 🇯🇵 Japanese (Japan): 'Konnichiwa' — said kon-NEE-chee-wah. People often bow gently when they say it. 🇮🇳 Hindi (India): 'Namaste' — said nah-mah-STAY. People often press their palms together when they say it. It means 'I bow to you'. 🇸🇦 Arabic (Middle East, North Africa and more): 'Marhaba' — said mar-HAH-bah. Arabic is written from right to left. Notice that some greetings change depending on the time of day. In French, 'Bonsoir' means 'good evening'. In Japanese, 'Ohayou' means 'good morning'. Paying attention to when you use a greeting shows respect for the culture. A worked example: Imagine you are visiting Japan. You walk into a shop in the afternoon and you want to say hello politely. You would say 'Konnichiwa' and give a small bow. This shows you understand the language AND the custom. That makes people feel respected and happy to help you.
