Who Are You Online? Mastering Digital Citizenship

Imagine a stranger walks up to you and reads aloud every comment, photo, and message you have ever posted online — in front of your entire school. How would you feel? Everything you do online leaves a trace, like footprints in wet concrete that set permanently. This trace is called your digital footprint, and it shapes how others see you now and in the future. Before we dive in, think about the last thing you posted, shared, or searched online. Would you be comfortable if your teacher, a future employer, or someone you admire could see it?

Digital citizenship is the responsible, ethical, and informed use of technology and the internet. Just as being a good citizen in a town means respecting laws, looking out for others, and using shared spaces fairly, being a good digital citizen means treating the online world — and the people in it — with the same respect and care. Digital citizenship has nine core elements, grouped into three areas: **1. Being Informed and Balanced** Digital literacy means being able to find, evaluate, and use online information critically. Not everything you read online is true. Misinformation — false information spread without malicious intent — and disinformation — false information spread deliberately to deceive — are serious problems. A digital citizen checks sources, looks for evidence, and questions what they see before sharing it. Screen time and digital health matter too. Research shows that passive scrolling (watching content without any real purpose) for long periods can harm sleep and mental wellbeing. Digital citizens make conscious choices about how long and why they use devices. **2. Being Safe and Secure** Privacy is your right to control your personal information. Personal data — your name, location, passwords, and photos — can be collected by websites and apps, sometimes without you realising. Strong passwords, privacy settings, and thinking before you share protect your data. Cybersecurity awareness means understanding threats like phishing — fake messages designed to trick you into giving away personal information — and malware — harmful software that damages devices or steals data. Digital citizens spot these threats and report them. **3. Being Ethical and Empathetic** Online communication still involves real people with real feelings. Cyberbullying — using technology to repeatedly harm, harass, or intimidate someone — has serious consequences for mental health and is illegal in many countries. A digital citizen never cyberbullies, intervenes as a bystander when they see it happening, and reports it to a trusted adult or platform. Copyright and intellectual property must also be respected. Creative work — music, images, writing, code — belongs to its creator. Copying it without permission or credit is digital theft. Using Creative Commons material correctly and citing sources are key skills. Digital citizenship is not about being perfect online. It is about making thoughtful choices, owning your mistakes, and treating the internet as a shared public space — one that you help keep safe and fair for everyone.
