How Does a Search Engine Find Answers?

Think about it: the internet has billions of web pages. Nobody could read all of them that quickly. So what is really going on behind the scenes?

A search engine is a tool that helps you find information on the internet. Popular examples include Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo. But how do they work? There are three big steps: crawling, indexing, and ranking. **Step 1 — Crawling** Search engines use special programs called crawlers (sometimes called spiders or bots). Crawlers travel across the internet, visiting web pages one by one. When a crawler visits a page, it reads all the text and follows any links it finds. Those links lead to new pages, and the crawler visits those too. This keeps going, like a spider moving from thread to thread on a web. **Step 2 — Indexing** After crawling, the search engine saves what it found in a giant list called an index. An index is like the back of a book, where you look up a word and find all the pages that mention it. The search engine's index stores billions of words and which websites contain them. **Step 3 — Ranking** When you type a search, the search engine looks through its index and finds pages that match your words. Then it has to decide: which results should go first? It uses clever rules called an algorithm to score each page. Pages that are clear, trustworthy, and popular with other users score higher. The highest-scoring pages appear at the top of your results.
