Who Were the Aztecs?

The Aztecs were a people who built a powerful in central Mexico. They called themselves the Mexica (say: meh-SHEE-kah). Their empire grew between about 1300 and 1521 CE — that means it lasted over 200 years. The Aztecs were brilliant builders and farmers. Because their city sat on a lake, they invented a clever farming method called . A chinampa is a raised garden bed built out into the shallow lake water. Farmers grew maize, beans, and squash on these 'floating gardens.' This fed the huge population of Tenochtitlan. At the heart of the city stood a great temple called the Templo Mayor. The Aztecs believed in many gods. They thought the sun god, Huitzilopochtli (say: weet-zee-loh-POCH-tlee), needed offerings to keep the sun rising every day. Priests held ceremonies at the Templo Mayor to honour the gods. The empire was ruled by a tlatoani, which means 'speaker' or ruler. The most famous ruler was Moctezuma II, who led the empire when the Spanish arrived. The Aztecs also had schools, markets, doctors, and a system of writing using pictures called s. In 1519, Spanish soldiers led by Hernán Cortés arrived in Mexico. The Spanish had guns and horses, which the Aztecs had never seen. They also brought diseases like smallpox that spread rapidly among the Aztec people, who had no — meaning their bodies had no protection against these new illnesses. By 1521, the Spanish had conquered Tenochtitlan and the Aztec Empire came to an end.
