The Kingdom of Kush: Africa's Ancient Power

Imagine flying over a desert in north-east Africa. Below you, sharp stone pyramids rise from golden sand — but you are not over Egypt. These pyramids belong to a different, older civilisation. Who built them? Today you will find out. Think about everything you already know about ancient Egypt. Kush was Egypt's powerful neighbour to the south — and sometimes its ruler.

The Kingdom of Kush was one of the earliest and most powerful civilisations in Africa. It grew up along the Nile River, in the region called Nubia — the land that is mostly modern-day Sudan. Kush began to rise around 2500 BCE. That means it is over 4,500 years old! At first, Egypt was stronger and actually conquered Kush. However, Kush grew in strength over time. By around 750 BCE, a Kushite king called Piye marched north and conquered Egypt. For about 100 years, Kushite pharaohs — called the 'Black Pharaohs' — ruled over Egypt. This was called the 25th Dynasty. What made Kush so powerful? There were three big reasons. First, the Nile flooded every year and left rich soil behind. Kushites used this fertile land to grow crops such as wheat and barley. Second, Kush controlled important trade routes. Merchants travelled through Kush carrying gold, ivory, iron, and ebony between central Africa and the Mediterranean world. This made Kush very wealthy. Third, the Kushites were skilled iron-smelters. Smelting means melting metal from rock. Their city of Meroë became famous across the ancient world as an iron-making centre. The Kushites built their own pyramids — over 200 of them! Kushite pyramids are narrower and steeper than Egyptian ones. They also developed their own writing system, called Meroitic script. Sadly, historians have not yet fully decoded it. Kush's capital cities shifted over time: first Kerma, then Napata, then Meroë. The kingdom lasted for over 3,000 years before it finally declined around 350 CE. Kush shows us that ancient Africa had rich, complex civilisations long before European explorers arrived.
