Welcome to Ancient Greece: A World That Shaped Ours

Imagine you invented a sport that billions of people still play thousands of years later. Or that you asked a question so good that teachers still use it today. That is exactly what the ancient Greeks did. Before we dive in, think about this: what things in your life do you think might have come from a very old civilisation?

Ancient Greece was not one country ruled by one king. Instead, it was made up of many separate city-states. A city-state was an independent city that had its own government, its own army, and its own rules. The two most famous city-states were Athens and Sparta. Athens valued education and the arts. Sparta trained its citizens to be tough soldiers. Ancient Greece reached its height of power roughly between 800 BCE and 146 BCE. BCE means 'Before the Common Era' — it counts years backwards before the year 0. So 800 BCE was about 2,800 years ago. The ancient Greeks believed in many gods and goddesses, such as Zeus (god of the sky) and Athena (goddess of wisdom). They built magnificent temples to honour these gods. The most famous is the Parthenon, a temple on a hill called the Acropolis in Athens. Greece gave the world some powerful ideas. In Athens, citizens could vote on how their city was governed. This idea is called democracy — the word comes from the Greek words 'demos' (people) and 'kratos' (power). It means the people hold the power. Many countries use democracy today. The Greeks also loved learning. Thinkers called philosophers asked big questions about life, truth, and how to behave. Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle are three famous philosophers whose ideas are still studied in schools. Greek scientists and mathematicians — including Pythagoras, who discovered a famous rule about triangles — changed how we understand the world. The ancient Greeks also gave us the Olympic Games. The first Olympics were held in Olympia in 776 BCE. Athletes from different city-states competed in events like running and wrestling to honour the god Zeus. Today, the modern Olympic Games are held every four years and athletes from around the whole world take part.
