Real World or Built World? Physical vs Human Features

Imagine you are standing on a hill looking down at a city near a river. You can see tall buildings, a winding river, a road bridge, green forests, and a harbour full of boats. Some of those things were there long before any person was born. Others were built by human hands. Can you guess which is which? This big question is at the heart of geography.

Geographers — people who study the Earth — divide the features of a place into two groups. The first group is called physical features. These are parts of the landscape that nature created. No person planned or built them. Mountains, rivers, lakes, forests, beaches, and volcanoes are all physical features. They formed over thousands or even millions of years through natural processes like the movement of land, flowing water, and weather. The second group is called human features. These are things that people have made or changed. Roads, bridges, towns, farms, airports, and ports are human features. People built them to live, travel, grow food, and trade. Here is an easy way to remember the difference: ask yourself, 'Would this exist if no human had ever been here?' If yes, it is a physical feature. If no, it is a human feature. Let's use London, England, as an example. The River Thames flowing through the city is a physical feature — it formed naturally long before London existed. But Tower Bridge, which crosses the river, is a human feature — workers built it between 1886 and 1894. Both features sit side by side in the same city, but they belong to different groups.
