The Three Keys to Reading Any Map

Every map has three things that help you read it. Learn these three things and you can read almost any map in the world. **1. The ** A key — also called a legend — is a small box on the map that explains what each or colour means. For example, a blue line might mean a river, a green patch might mean a park, and a red cross might mean a hospital. Without the key, the map is like a message in code. With the key, everything makes sense. **2. The ** A compass rose is a star-shaped symbol on the map. It shows you the four main directions: North (N), South (S), East (E), and West (W). North is almost always pointing towards the top of the map. So if you want to travel north, you move towards the top of the map. A useful trick: 'Never Eat Soggy Waffles' — N, E, S, W going clockwise. **3. s** Most maps have a grid — a set of lines that cross to make squares, like a chess board. Each column has a letter and each row has a number. A grid reference is the letter and number that name one square. For example, square B3 means column B, row 3. You always say the letter (across) first, then the number (up). A good saying to remember this: 'Along the corridor, then up the stairs.'

Worked example

Look at a simple town map. The key shows: blue line = river, green square = park, black dot = school. You can see a black dot in square C2. That means the school is in grid square C2. The compass rose shows North is at the top. The park (green square) is in square C3, which is directly south of the school — because south is towards the bottom of the map.
