Build Our Class Anthology!

Imagine you could pick your ten favourite stories, poems, or pieces of writing and put them all in one book. That book would be yours — full of the things you love most. Now imagine doing that with your whole class. Every person adds something they are proud of or something they love. What would you choose? Think for a moment before we dive in.

An anthology is a collection of different pieces of writing gathered together in one book. The pieces might be poems, short stories, diary entries, or any other type of writing. They are usually connected by a theme — a shared idea or topic that links them all. For example, a class might make an anthology called 'Our Amazing World' and fill it with poems about nature, stories about travel, and descriptions of favourite places. Every piece fits the theme. When you build an anthology, you make three important choices: 1. CHOOSE your theme. A clear theme gives your anthology a purpose. Ask: what do these pieces have in common? 2. SELECT the pieces. Each piece should fit the theme and show the writer's best work. A good selector asks: does this belong? Does it add something different? 3. INTRODUCE each piece. A short introduction — called an editor's note — tells the reader who wrote the piece, what it is about, and why it was chosen. It is usually two or three sentences long. Here is a worked example of an editor's note: 'Rain Dance' is a poem by Amara in Year 4. She wrote it after watching a storm from her bedroom window. We chose it because her words make you feel the rain on your own skin.
