Here is how to write a good summary in three steps: **Step 1 — Read and understand.** Read the whole text first. Make sure you understand what it is about before you start writing anything. **Step 2 — Find the s.** Ask yourself: 'What is the most important thing this text is saying?' Look for the main topic and the most important points. These are the ideas that the whole text depends on. s like names of minor characters, exact numbers, or extra examples are usually not key ideas. **Step 3 — Write it in your own words.** A good summary uses your own words, not copied sentences from the text. Keep your summary short — usually no more than one quarter of the length of the original.

Worked example

**Original text (63 words):** 'Honeybees are remarkable insects. They live together in large groups called colonies, which can contain up to 60,000 bees. Inside the colony, every bee has a job. Worker bees collect nectar from flowers and bring it back to the hive, where it is turned into honey. The queen bee's only job is to lay eggs. Without bees, many plants could not produce fruit or seeds.' **Step 1 — Read and understand:** The text is about honeybees and why they matter. **Step 2 — Find the key ideas:** • Honeybees live in large colonies. • Every bee has a different job. • Bees are important for plants. **Step 3 — Write in your own words:** 'Honeybees live in large groups and each bee has a different role.
