Melting Clocks and Flying Fish: Understanding Surrealism

Close your eyes for a moment and think about the strangest dream you have ever had. Maybe you were flying over your school, or your best friend turned into a fish, or time seemed to move backwards. In dreams, the ordinary rules of the world stop working — and that is exactly what a group of artists decided to paint. Before you move on, think about this: what if an artist believed that the images produced by a dreaming or unconscious mind were more honest and more powerful than anything seen in waking life? How would that change the kind of art they made?

Surrealism was an artistic and literary movement that began in Paris, France, in 1924. The French writer André Breton launched it with a document called the Surrealist Manifesto. Breton and his circle were deeply influenced by the ideas of Sigmund Freud, a psychologist who argued that the unconscious mind — the part of the mind we cannot directly control or observe — is full of hidden desires, fears, and images. Surrealist artists wanted to give that hidden world a visual form. The word 'Surrealism' comes from the French 'sur' (meaning above or beyond) and 'réalisme' (meaning realism). So Surrealism literally means 'beyond reality' — an art that goes further than what the eye normally sees. Surrealism emerged partly as a reaction to the horrors of the First World War (1914–1918). Many artists felt that rational, logical thinking had led civilisation into catastrophic violence. They turned instead to the irrational and the subconscious as a new source of truth and creativity. Surrealist artists used several distinctive techniques: 1. Unexpected juxtaposition — placing two unrelated objects side by side to create a strange or unsettling effect. René Magritte placed a realistic bowler-hatted man in front of an apple the size of a room. 2. Transformation — showing objects or figures changing into something else. Salvador Dalí painted human figures with drawers built into their bodies, as if the human form were a piece of furniture. 3. Disruption of scale — making objects far bigger or smaller than they should be. This breaks the viewer's sense of the familiar world. 4. Dreamlike settings — placing recognisable objects in impossible or contradictory environments. Dalí's famous painting The Persistence of Memory (1931) shows melting pocket watches draped over a barren landscape, suggesting that time itself is soft and unreliable. 5. Automatism — a method where artists drew or painted without consciously planning, letting the hand move freely to release unconscious imagery. Joan Miró used this technique to create fluid, biomorphic shapes that resemble organisms from another world. Key Surrealist artists include Salvador Dalí (Spain), René Magritte (Belgium), Frida Kahlo (Mexico), Max Ernst (Germany), and Meret Oppenheim (Switzerland). Together they produced work across painting, sculpture, photography, and film.
